What has gone before (Action Report, February 17th):
Tomb the Dwarf apologized for his suicidally reckless leadership in the victory over the Claw of Jormag. Then, in a series of startling admissions, he explained that "the Dwarf" is more than a cognomen; it's a half-truth. He is the child of a Norn father and a Dwarf mother . . . and, yes, much older than he looks. He gave no real explanation for his aging, and seemed to have none. His mother was a Stone Summit dwarf, and secretly a member of Brotherhood of the Dragon. She was exiled by the Deldrimmor dwarves, and then by the Stone Summit for miscegenation. Living in the northwest Far Shiverpeaks and unaware of Jalis' Great Rite, the effect on her was much delayed. Eventually, however, the power of the spell and the Great Dwarf mind reached even that far, and Tomb (by then a young teenager) had to watch his mother slowly lost to him, changed into a part of the Great Dwarf and called underground to join the petrified dwarves. The process took decades. Tomb assumed he was immune. He was wrong. This was the permanent change that had been slowly affecting him.
He revealed all this in fear that, if not, soon he would be unable to.
The request of Owl's Havroun to retrieve the Sacred Totem seemed a fitting way to end the life he knew, but he had failed at that task.
