I'm steadily going through A Night in the Lonesome October, by Roger Zelazny. I fell in love with it when I listened to the audiobook version, and I just had to get a hard copy.
The story is told from the perspective of a watchdog, Snuff, through the month of October. It primarily takes place in the London area, and there are a lot of interesting little nuggets from Victorian gothic horror, science fiction, and other genres to pick up on. It isn't a very long book, but it's well worth the read. The audiobook is very enjoyable if you prefer that method.
