  1. I won’t be able to make scheduled events / stuff that super earlier pst but I will try to jump in when I’m around!

I have power reaper geared & ready for WvW (both roaming and zerging) so you can put me as dps or as the party-army as I’d prefer being able to try out new things.

@QuietlyExisting @Trevuori @Mortuus @Zeironde @Owinn So the question is when do we want to get together this week? Is there an evening around 6 or 7 EST that can work and won't affect anyone attending another event?

Uhh I’d need to know ahead of time so I can plan. Tuesday’s / Thursdays won’t work cause i have dnd & I’m starting a raid static. BUT you guys do what works for you and I’ll work out how to be there also 👌

I'd be interested in joining. I play a bunker guardian with Quietly from time to time. I stand on a node and read "War and Peace" while she runs around the map slaying multitudes of enemies.,

    😂 😂

I'd be interested in spvp. I'm only available in the evenings during the weekdays or early afternoons on Saturdays. Sundays are very hit or miss.

I've played some GW2 spvp but my experience is limited. I almost exclusively play my warrior but I know they aren't considered all that good in the current meta. There's a support build I keep reading about that sounds fun to play though. Healbreaker I believe. I'm willing to learn other classes though.

Healbreaker is very good right now for 1v1s and is definitely in the meta atm!

You were rocking on your healer last night. Did you ever play a match as the Scrapper? Any thoughts on it?

I haven't yet. I'm planning on hopping in sometime today/tonight to give it a try!

  6. I'd love for something to take off for spvp! :)

Although my schedule is so back and forth so it's hard for me to set down actual time. I could possibly be a sub in for groups if you want/need it. I'm fine with any experience as I'm not "new" but I'm also not "experienced". Generally weekends are best or later in the evenings (not Tuesday or Thursdays because I have prior engagements those days).

I can play a variety of stuff. Core Necro (Duelist), Reaper (Team fight dps), Support Ele (Team Fight, sometimes bunker if we can rotate right), DD Thief (roamer), and I'm learning Power Weaver (team fight oriented), DH (traps), as well as Support Guard. This will all likely change as I get more practice on other classes / find interest in doing other builds.

NOTE - I like playing around and learning new stuff so if anyone has any suggestions of fun builds 👀 Just going to leave this on all of my spvp posts from now on.

Did you ever find a build @QuietlyExisting that you found satisfactory?

I've been messing around with classes and trying things out. I really liked core necro (though I didn't run double blood traits so it wasn't an actual "bunker" and I used it more as a duelist, though mobility isn't great) for it and I've been having a lot of fun on support tempest w/ water & earth. A lot of it is mostly knowing the class more (or so I've discovered for me personally). I haven't actually found a "bunker" that's made specifically for bunkering though. :(

If you have any suggestions let me know!

What do you think is the easiest class to play in PvP?  Maybe I'm trying to play a class that is above my skills when it comes to playing against other players.  I know mesmer, ele and necro can be difficult.  Warrior?  Guardian?

Like Mortuss said, Gods of Pvp and Meta battle are great places to find "meta" builds for the current pvp community. If you look on them they should also say how hard the build is to play, or at least that's what GodsofPvpP does and I usually pull my builds from that site over metabattle. It's run by someone well known within the pvp community who coordinates with MightyTeaPot and other pvpers. I'd recommend looking there if you want, there aren't as many as on metabattle but unless angells is behind it's usually up to date. GodsOfPvP also has several guides as well on spvp if you're interested.

As for easy classes, Core Necro is a very easy class to jump into when it comes to pvp. I main a necro though so it may be that I"m simply used to it but its listed as low on the GoP site. This along with guardian (the current meta is burn DH) and ranger. I'll leave a few builds below so you can peak at them if you're interested.

    Core Necro: https://www.godsofpvp.net/builds/necromancer
Burn DH : https://www.godsofpvp.net/builds/guardian - *note on this* The current meta is really in favor of this build, it's kind of toxic but you will definitely get carried by this build if you're looking for something 'easy' to play while you learn mechanics / rotations / roles / etc.
Spellbreaker: https://www.godsofpvp.net/builds/warrior-spellbreaker - I'm not sure how viable this is as of the December patch, but it was extremely popular in 2020

I can also do some searching through metabattle if you want some from there! My biggest advice is to try out a bunch of different classes before you find a favorite :)

  9. @khadian6829ahhh you came across a hacker. Yeah, that's a different sort of botting then what I originally thought! The good thing is that they aren't as common as one might believe from how people complain about them. While they are popping up a bit more in things like pvp & wvw, they are still very rare to come across and people will generally band together to take care of them if they know that they are there. If you suspect that someone is hacking you could always record your match (which is also a good way to improve in pvp) and trim it down for 'evidence'. If you send it to anet they may or may not take care of it. You can't really do much about them, so yeah it's really about just trying not to let it get to you. It's a pain and I don't get why people do it either, probably cause they can't handle losing so they need to cheat to win. There are other bots that aren't hackers, who are basically just computers running the account so they are mindlessly there to farm rewards.

Just keep plowing away at ranked, eventually you will play enough that it'll even out so that you aren't having as uneven matches. It's hard cause the pvp community is very small in gw2. Also once you're a bit higher up you'll get out of the bots ranks, like I said before.

What are you playing class wise? Gods of PvP is a good site for builds so def good going on that :) If you're having issues with finding synergies you could try learning other classes / roles to fit yourself into the group better. It's rough but most people won't change unless they are more experienced so it's good to have a few options available to you so that you can do the changing.

  10. Hey Khadian, first off welcome to RoH (which is extremely late on my ends so my apologies for that). I’m glad to see people doing PvP! It’s a lot of fun but I can definitely see the frustrations that you’re having with it. They are, in most ways, unavoidable so the best advice I can give to you at this moment is try not to let it spoil the fun you’re having. Progression and advancement in competitive things like PvP are always going to have its hiccups. Sadly anet doesn’t do much in ways of assisting in eliminating some of them, it’s a bummer really.

As for your questions. I’m not sure if you’re having issues defeating the bots or if you’re having a hard time in terms of how frustrating they are to play with. If the first, you’ll get to the point where you will easily be able to down a bad bot. They don’t generally have much skill so they congregate around the lower ranks in PvP. Of course once you get to that point you’ll end up being frustrated with them being on their team and such. If you plan to do ranked, I’ve heard tell that they aren’t able to make it past silver so once you can sit around gold you shouldn’t need to worry so much about them. I don’t do much ranked so I can’t tell you from experience if that is true or not.

And for the buffs, gw2 meta atm is bad. Toxic builds are everywhere. As of this the dragonhunter build is the big meta game for it. Before it were things like flamethrower or Nades engis. Due to Anets thought process on “balancing” there will inevitably be something at the top with buffs that make them a pain in the... booty (must keep it pg). The thing is that without the builds heavy favor because of meta, the players themselves aren’t generally that skilled. There are some who are, don’t get me wrong. And it’s perfectly okay to play these builds if you’re having a good time. Though I don’t suggest them if you want to get better. The key there is that you should be having a good time and working toward getting better.

Basically what I’m saying in a super long-winded way, is that you just need to make sure you have the right mindset going into PvP with all of this. It’s hard and I know people get competitive, but it is a game so if you feel yourself getting frustrated over it then just take a 20 minute break or something to keep yourself in the right headspace. I know people who say if they lose more than 3 games they need to stop for the day. Knowing what you can handle so you don’t stress about it is really important. Some of the best parts of PvP are the competition and the people who want to get better along / against you. This is great, it’s also not great if you let it rub you the wrong way.

If you’re having issues with winning and want help, finding people who PvP around the time you do is a great option. You can have full teams of 5 in Unranked and duos in ranked. It makes it 100000000x more enjoyable with people to play with. And also mixing up your builds, experimenting, trying diff classes, just getting used to PvP maps or strategies is a lot of fun!

While I’m not sure any of this helped, I hope it did. If you ever want some company PvPing and you’re on late night/ see me on shoot me a message :) I’m not the greatest in the world but I like to kick a little booty in my free time.

    best of luck!

  11. Hey Motueka!

Sorry, I've been meaning to get the advancing in pvp section of the newest guide done but I've been hitting some procrastination blocks the last few weeks. It is supposed to cover things like reading the map, rotation, and stuff like that when it's done. I'm not a veteran but I am working on advancing in this stuff also for my own play so I've done some research on it.

Personally, I think thief is a great class to learn rotation on so I don't think you need to move to a new class unless you're finding that you don't like / think thief is fun. If you're switching simply because of match outcome then you're not going to get the practice you need on a class you like. Much of getting better in pvp is practice and persistence. Matches are always going to be touch and go with the current meta, matchmaking system, etc.

The thing with rotation is that it's very situational. It depends on maps, nodes, and players. You will naturally get to reading this stuff better with more experience. The biggest thing is to practice no tunnel visioning. That alone is going to be your biggest downfall (it's something I'm working on also). Don't tunnel vision and know your role. If you are meant to be +1ing, then you need to look at what types of +1 you have available to you. As a thief, you're not strong in group fights as they can take up too much time and you don't have many "team" skills. Jumping into large team fights will cause you to tunnel vision more, especially because fights like that can be drawn out to several minutes depending on teams / players. You will be more useful to your team elsewhere.

Like, for example. You just capped home node. You have a 3 v 3 team fight mid and a 1v1 on far and idk where the 4th person is but they are somewhere so you'll have to watch out for them. The person far will 9 times out of 10, be more effective in a team fight than you will. In order to support the 3v3 mid, you'd want to +1 in the far node to try to get a quick kill to free up that player from the fight so that they can support your team mid. You help take down the person defending far as quick as possible, then you decap while your teammate goes mid and get the heck out of there because that player you just killed will be respawning. Don't bother capping it unless you think you have time and aren't needed elsewhere on the map. The 5 points they get if they kill you aren't worth the 1 or 2 points you'd get from full capping & risking them bursting you. Instead of seeing your role as 'decap & +1 any fights there are', you should see it as your job is free up other players on the map so that they can rotate / do their roles more effectively. Decap so no one else on your team has to & a bunker can come on to the node to cap / hold it, +1 so that your teammate who can be more useful elsewhere is able to do that.

Knowing when to disengage is another huge thing for thief. If that unknown 5th player comes to plus one also, consider having you and your other teammate pull off that node if it looks like you aren't going to do any good there. Dying gives the team 5 points, if two of you die that 10 points. That adds up & causes the spiral / snowball effect for your team. Even if your teammate refuses to pull off and it looks like you are going to lose, pull off the node. There is no shame in tactical retreats.

As for tunnel visioning, the biggest thing is making yourself look at the map every 30 seconds. Just get into the habit of it. Cap a node? Check map. Kill a player? Check map. See that the teammate you were going to +1 died / won? Check map. Constantly be checking and adapting. It's going to take persistence to form the habit and you won't be great at it at first, just keep going with it. When the match is done, ask yourself if you could be looking at the map more and try to do it the next match. If you're making a conscious decision to do something, it will eventually become much harder not to do it than to completely forget about it & tunnel vision.

These are just my intermediate player also learning to be effective in pvp matches tips though. I'm not sure if this is the type of advice you're looking for.

Some good people to bug about pvp are @Deyna (Deyna is very experienced in pvp overall, he's offered me really great tips about map approaches) and @Kaii (An experienced thief, he could probably help with any technical issues you may be having with the build / role).

  12. I've been wanted to explore the different classes & learn different roles recently for pvp. Atm I'm really feeling like I want to learn a fun bunker build! If you know of any good ones please let me know :)

Going to be doing some research also for it 👌

  13. Hey! I'm not sure about duos for competitive but we do have quite a few people who pvp that may be interested. Generally a group of us pvps at night so you should drop by and do some group stuff with us! We mostly mess around but it's a good place to have fun outside of comp. If you hit it off with anyone it may be a chance to find a partner that fits with your style.
