  1. In my slow progression, mostly listening at work, I am almost finished...with part 2, lol.

It's been more quiet around here than I expected after the initial surge of interest.

I'm not sure if most people are waiting until completely done to talk, or decided to skip this one.

Guess I could try to come up with some thoughts myself to start a discussion, later...

In any case, hope everyone else is doing well!

  2. I was considering getting the book we selected as an audiobook.  Not something I've ever done, not sure if I'll like it, but listening at work would save a lot of time.

Y'all might be interested to know To Sleep in a Sea of Stars is narrated by Jennifer Hale!  Tons of voice acting roles, but perhaps particularly recognizable to many RoH members as the female Trooper/Bastila Shan/Satele Shan in SWTOR/KOTOR, and Commander Shepard in Mass Effect.

(I know her first as Juni in Freelancer, but that's a bit more obscure)

Thanks everyone! I'll add the vote tomorrow for people to select the book. I want to do a weighted poll so that we since there are a lot of options and this will give you a chance to pick your top 3.

Is there not a poll yet or am I overlooking it somewhere?  No rush if you haven't made one yet, I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything.

  4. I really need to start reading again more this year, maybe I'll join y'all.  I was such a huge bookworm as a kid but it's difficult now.

I've heard Ancillary Justice recommended but not read it, interesting to know it forms part of Dlique's backstory!

Scifi/fantasy series already on my list to catch up with include Brandon Sanderson (a few books behind now, last one I finished was Oathbringer) and Iain M. Banks' Culture novels (distracted by other things partway through Look to Windward).

  5. This sounds like a lot of fun!  I'm also pretty inexperienced at D&D (watched a lot via Critical Role but my actual playtime has been limited and infrequent).

Unfortunately it's right in the timeslot I am usually playing SWTOR with IRL friends once a week.  I might talk to them about rescheduling for a bit, but for now I'm assuming I won't join.  I'll definitely keep an eye out for future campaigns!

  6. I posted in a thread elsewhere on the forum before discovering there was an actual book club.  Hopefully nobody minds if I copy all the words I wrote here, even though the only one I'm currently reading is Iain M. Banks' Excession.

I used to be a massive bookworm as a child/teenager, but my rate of consumption has slowed as I've gotten older.  Gaming has kind of taken over as a hobby.  I'd like to try and read more regularly again this year.  Focusing on sci-fi/fantasy, given where I'm posting:

I grew up on the old Star Wars EU (now Legends), and it's probably why I'm here now.  My favorite authors with multiple titles to their credit include Timothy Zahn, Michael Stackpole/Aaron Allston, Matt Stover, and Karen Traviss.  For one-offs, I also distinctly remember Sean Stewart's Yoda:  Dark Rendezvous standing out among the Clone Wars novels despite its (IMO) generic title.

The short story anthologies were fun, and it's my belief that after the New Jedi Order, we should have gotten another round of those and let the "main characters" live in their hard-fought peace instead of almost immediately plunging back into multiple galaxy-spanning conflicts and Skywalker-Solo family tragedy on flimsy pretexts.  I was sad Disney overwrote the old EU, but I can't pretend I liked the direction the last bit of it was going before either.

The Wheel of Time was THE giant doorstopper fantasy epic for me, and introduced me to Brandon Sanderson.  It's been years now since I read one of the books myself, but I'm currently enjoying a first-time readthrough/analysis of it on Tor.com.

    More recently:

I was impressed by his work on WoT, and as a result read most of Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere setting, starting with Mistborn.  Not the latest Stormlight Archives entry yet though...

Patrick Rothfuss' tale of Kvothe was, so far, a great experience to read with some beautiful writing.  I hope to find out how it ends someday!

I've never played the tabletop version of Warhammer 40,000, but I got interested in the lore through the Dawn of War RTS.  Dan Abnett's Gaunt's Ghosts books, chronicling the exploits of the Tanith First-and-Only in the Sabbat Worlds Crusade, are a particular favorite.

Currently, I'm working my way through Iain M. Banks' novels about the Culture.  It might sound silly (or perhaps, *ahem*, lacking in gravitas), but the whimsical ship names were what first attracted me -- my main prior experience of space opera having been Star Wars/Star Trek and their more serious/intimidating warship philosophies.

  7. Fire Emblem fan reporting in; this game is the reason I bought my Switch!

Flew with the Black Eagles first; I have since started both Golden Deer and Blue Lions (on the hardest difficulty level they added later, because I'm sure Dimitri can handle it!) at different times but gotten distracted by other games before finishing (finishing that Blue Lion run is steadily marching up my gaming to-do list, though).

Although Catherine is a monster on the battlefield with that ridiculous Thunderbrand, I prefer her partner Shamir for personality.  Would have married her if I didn't decide I should pick Edelgard on her own route.

    Anyone have a favorite student?
