  1. I am wondering if anyone would be up for trying out challenges for Sword and Shield when they come out.

Examples would be "specializing" in one type of Pokémon (multi-types and pre-evolutions are ok), never using a Pokémon Center outside of forced uses or if a Pokémon feints it gets released.

I have a buddy that did the first one I listed with another friend. They each would choose a type (that wasn't weak/strong to the other) and any Pokémon that had that type (or evolved into it), the chooser could use. In this instance, him and his friend would battle every once in a while.

This thread will be for news, events and free Pokémon for the games, with the sole exception of Pokémon Sword and Shield. S&S is being discussed in a separate thread and has a poll.

I wont be able to keep up with all the latest by myself, so feel free to post any new things below and I will add it to this post!

    April 3rd 2019

Free Oranguru and Passimian, each with their Hidden Ability.

Requires a subscription to the Pokémon Bank (5 USD per year) and a copy of Pokémon Ultra Sun or Moon.

More on how to obtain these two Pokémon, here.

  3. As I come up with a TCG/Deck section of the pokemon Guides, I was wondering if anyone had any advice on making decks from scratch.

I dont know if I'll ever get around to making one, so I might do that sometime, too.

  4. I was thinking back on the name I had chosen for the interest group and began thinking, "does the name represent the group focus?"

I want to say it's a fan club, as theres more than just Pokemon Video Games.

Before I go and just rename the group, I'd like some thoughts.

Should the name of the group be more generalized so it can include more aspects of the Pokemon fandom?

    Examples:

    Pokemon Fan Club

    Pokemon Club

    Pokemon Fandom

    A Brief History:

It all began the 27th of February in 1996 when Pokémon Red and Green released in Japan. The US, Europe and other countries would also experience the smash hit within the next few years with the additions of Pokémon Blue and Yellow. To say the franchise was a hit is quite a bit of an understatement. Millions around the world were captivated by the creatures they could catch, train and battle.

With each new generation of games, there were more Pokémon to catch and train, more for the Masters-to-be to "catch 'em all." With each new pair of games, came a new region, sidequests, minigames and improvements. Did you know that the first Pokémon games (Red, Blue, Green and Yellow), there were no Dark, Steel or Fairy types? And Pokémon breeding wasn't introduced until generation 2?

That's right, there was also a time when Pokémon Natures, Gender and Abilities didn't exist yet.

But, from these humble beginnings, the Pokémon franchise grew from its original 151 Pokemon. And it grew. And it kept growing to todays 800+ Pokémon, with even more to arrive in the new Pokémon Sword and Shield games for the Switch in late 2019.

    Playing the Core Video Games:

    Spoiler

What I mean by "Core" game:

The "Core" games are the RPG video games that include exploring a region, catching and training a team of Pokémon, Gym battles (or the Island Challenges in Sun & Moon), and battling wild Pokémon to weaken them before throwing a Pokeball.

    Ready, Set, Play!

Getting started is really easy. If you want to play the latest Pokémon games, get yourself a Nintendo 3DS or 2DS if you don't already have one (I highly recommend the latest handheld for the sake of never having to worry about which DS game will work on your handheld). If you get the "2DS" version, these guys run at around $150 for a brand new one, or they can be found at a used/trade-in store for less. The older games will be more obvious for which handheld will be needed (Gameboy, Gameboy Color, etc). For the sake of not wanting to derail the topic of Pokémon too much, that's about where I'll leave the "what you need" topic.

So you've put the game in, powered it up and met the Professor at the start of your game. After the gender and name questions, you're ushered into the Pokémon world, and soon found yourself staring at three Pokémon. By no means will any of these Pokémon be required for any of the story or progress in the game, so pick one that looks coolest to you. If none of them appeal to you, there's virtually the entire game to find more creatures to replace your party with.

The most important thing about Pokémon is that you're having fun!

    The Types of Pokémon

    Spoiler

Every species of Pokémon has one or two types. Every generation of starter Pokémon are Fire, Water or Grass types, and many of them have a second type. Charmander, for example, is a pure Fire type, but it's fully evolved form Charizard is of the Fire and Flying types. Charmander's sole Fire type is weak to Water, Rock and Ground type attacks. That means it'll take double damage. Charizard, however, is a little bit different. With the Flying type, Charizard becomes weak to Electricity, and takes even more damage from Rock types because both Fire and Flying types are weak to Rock type attacks. However, there's an upside. Flying types are immune to Ground types, so it's Fire type's weakness to Ground types is eliminated. Charizard also takes less damage from fighting type attacks.

With a total of 18 types in the core series, it can be quite a lot to take in at first. Just have fun and don't fret. It will all become clearer as you play.

    Status Effects and Stats

    Spoiler

Status Effects include Sleep, Paralysis, Frozen, Confusion, Poison and Burn. They are fairly self explanatory, though there are a couple things to note. Paralysis decreases a Pokémon's speed as well as sometimes make it unable to use a move. Burn decreases a Pokémon's physical attack as well as does some damage to the afflicted Pokémon each turn. Confusion will sometimes make a Pokémon hurt itself, but will be cleared generally within a few turns. All but one or two status effects will remain after battle, but while a Pokémon is afflicted by any but Confusion, it cannot become affected by another.

Every Pokémon has five values called stats, seven if you include the hidden values. These are Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense and Speed. The two hidden values are Evasion and Accuracy. Every time a Pokémon levels up, most or all of the five stats will raise.

Attack determines how powerful physical moves are. Special Attack determines how powerful special moves are. Defense and Special Defense determines how much physical and special attacks are reduced. Speed determines how fast a Pokémon is, and usually determines which Pokémon goes first.

    Natures and Abilities

    Spoiler

All Pokémon have a nature and a passive ability. 20 of the 25 Natures increase one of the Pokémon's stats by 10% and decreases another by the same amount. When viewing the Pokémon's stats (Attack, Special Attack, etc), the increased stat is shown in red and the decreased stat is shown in blue. Natures do not effect a Pokémon's HP.

So far, there are many Abilities. Each Pokémon has one, granting it one of a large variety of benefits. Examples include: Limber prevents paralysis, Clear Body prevents another Pokémon's moves and abilities from lowering the Pokémon's stats, and Water Absorb restores HP instead of taking damage from a water type move.

    Building a Team

    Spoiler

Building the perfect team: there is no "perfect" team. Well, actually the perfect team consists of the Pokemon you really like. Every game in the core series can be played with a single Magikarp, if a masochist player really wants to. Or you could rock it out by specializing in one of the 18 types. Love fairy types? Cool, go for a team of only fairy types! Love Wishiwashi? Awesome, go for a team of those guys!

Many will advise to have a well balanced team, and they're not wrong. If you find yourself pretty weak to some types and start struggling, consider getting a Pokemon that is strong against the type your team is weak to. Alternatively, if you really want to keep your team, it's possible to teach some Pokemon moves that can really hurt the types they're weak to.

Example: Typhlosion is a fire type, it is weak to ground and water types. Typhlosion is able to learn Grass Knot, which is super effective to both of its weaknesses.

Theres over 800 Pokemon and everyone is bound to find at least several cool Pokémon.

As I may later improve this really basic guide, I would like to ask all trainers what they'd like to pass down to brand new trainers.

What's the one or two pieces if wisdom you'd pass on to a new Trainer? If applicable, why?

    Reasons for editing thread:

March 31: Put all the Video Game related stuff into one "Spoiler" tag

March 24: Changed Title and added "Building a Team"

  6. Welcome to the thread for everything we know about Pokémon Sword and Shield.

As more information is revealed, this post will be updated to reflect the new info.

Please feel free to correct or alert me to new info so I can update!

Here is the official Pokémon website, including the official, teasing trailer.

    The new region: Galar

    1988307133_GalarRegion.thumb.jpg.86ea0d206be63397804a1aa98c23679b.jpg

The new region, Galar, will be featured in Sword and Shield.

Galar is considered to be based of the island of Great Britain, featuring some geographical similarities to the real world country.

With the Galar region, comes the return of gym leaders, new Pokémon and three more starter Pokémon.

Grookey, the curios grass type monkey.

Scorbunny, the energetic fire type bunny.

Sobble, the shy water type lizard.

Current release date is "late 2019."

    What does this mean?

I would wager shortly after black Friday in November (third or fourth week in November).

  7. @Jaark, if you need one or two, I'm pretty sure I have an Eevee in my bank, and I would need to breed it (with my ditto), but I can at least get you set up with a couple.

If you end up getting one by some other means sooner, I wont take offense.

  8. I'm pretty hyped. The stadium looked sweet and I hope it's a throwback to something like the Stadium games from the N64 console.

I know I'm gonna prepurchase both, though I expect I'll start play Sword first.

I've never been into the PvP  battles, but I would love trading. Before selling my Sun/Moon and DS, I had a couple boxes of pokemon I had planned on trading. Right now, I've got a bunch sitting and waiting in the bank.

The one thing I really hope they do not do is "Gala Versions" of some pokemon.

Looking forward to seeing the new gen.

    • Thanks 1
  9. Just hoping to drum up a little discussion in this new club!

What is your team and why do you choose those pokemon? Do you find yourself always adding certain species to your team?

When I play, I find myself grabbing a few as fast as I can.

These are: Persian, Charizard, Dragonite and Eevee

Persian because I love cats and I like Persian's model more than the others.

Charizard and Dragonite kinda for the same reasoning of "I also really like dragon pokemon."

Eevee because it's cute and I can never decide which one to evolve it to.

I've taken a liking to Primarina, about as much as I really like Blaziken. They're a pretty close "next up" on my team if I have available spots.

  10. This is where everyone is welcome to share their friend codes for their Nintendo devices/consoles.

Feel free to share, or if you're concerned about throwing your code out into the internet, all are welcome to ask and share via private messages.
