    Points Available: 6

    Flaws:
    1. Amnesia: Since waking in the sewers of Sentinel (in Alik'r) as a teen with a severe blow to the head (scar is hidden by hair), she has no memory of her childhood or parents. Never remembering who she was. She once used the name Melina, but now travels under a different name (see below).

    2. Dark Fate: She occasionally has nightmares of her throat being cut and dying. She doesn't know when, but she is fully aware that someday the Dark Brotherhood will succeed in killing her, yet she is determined to prolong her life as much as possible.

    3. Notoriety: Having abandoned the secret organization of the Dark Brotherhood, Whisper is now hunted by them, as they seek to end her life. So far, she has been able to avoid them or defeat those sent after her, due to the mastery of her skills.

    4. Addiction: Alcohol. She drinks often in order to sleep and forget about her loneliness, almost always in private. This is, of course, detrimental to her health. She is aging beyond her years.

    5. Paranoid: Because of her above flaws, she is overly paranoid about strangers and situations. Always on the defensive. Never fully trusting anyone. This has left her to live a lonely and isolated life, and she fears confiding anything to anyone.

    Number of Flaws: 5

Backstory: Whisper spent 8 years as an assassin in the Dark Brotherhood. After learning and mastering her skills, she had grown tired of constantly killing and left the organization behind. She is now hunted by the assassins, though she manages to keep her identity secret. She now is currently seeking to blend into the organization called the Circle of Hope, a place she believes would be under scrutinized by the Dark Brotherhood. A place they would never think to look.

Now, having successfully staged the death of Whisper for the benefit of the Dark Brotherhood (with the help of the Circle of Hope), she has assumed the name, Riannye, and has begun a new life among new friends.

  3. OOC: This is an addendum to Baric's background. This little scene demonstrates his combat prowess, strength, and fortitude.

    Hard-Fought Conclusion

Baric dodged to the left, avoiding the massive mace the giant man was trying to connect with his skull. The ball was twice the size of his head and covered with dagger-sized spikes. As Baric again managed to avoid being hit by the deadly weapon, he swung his broadsword around, only to once again clang against the plate armor the bandit wore.

The other three men in the band of robbers hadn’t caused him much difficulty and now lay lifeless on the ground, but this one was proving to be a bit of a problem. The huge man was at least seven feet tall, half a head higher than Baric, and he also weighed more. Many called Baric a giant, but this massive behemoth was bigger and stronger. Even Baric's considerable strength would have a hard time wielding the massive weapon now being used against him.

Baric performed a skillful overhead attack with his great broadsword, only to have his onslaught bounce off the bandit’s metal helmet, and his powerful swing took his blade past the man’s shoulders and all the way down to the ground. The hulking outlaw brought his mace high and down toward Baric, but Baric’s agility allowed him to dodge out of the way. His sword, however, was not so lucky. The monstrous mace crashed down onto his long broadsword, snapping it in two, leaving Baric with only the pommel and less than an arm’s length of the blade.

The bandit's armor was thick, but Baric knew it did not cover his side well. He spun around, dodging another blow, and thrust the broken blade into the giant's side, burying what was left of his sword up to the hilt. The large man grunted in pain as Baric twisted the blade to do as much damage as possible.

As the robber dropped his mace, Baric took advantage of the moment, pulling his sword from the man's side and swinging it around and up into the bigger man's throat. The bandit fell to his face as his life flowed out in a stream of blood from his sliced neck, smashing into the ground with a loud thud. Baric dropped his broken blade to the ground and put his hands on his knees, trying to regain his breath.

“That man couldn’t have been human,” Baric said to himself, his breathing heavy and labored. “I swear, his parents must have been giants.”

Though the truth of that comment was unlikely, Baric felt he had just run a marathon across the entire continent of Tamriel. He fell to his knees with exhaustion, allowing his breathing to return to normal, as he looked around the bandit’s campsite. The four bandits now lay dead, and he had nothing more than a few minor wounds, which he began healing with his magic.

He had tracked the other three bandits to this campsite. The fourth man, the giant, had come out of a nearby cave, much to his surprise. This was evidently their hideout. After a few moments of rest, Baric rose to his feet and began searching the bodies of the men and their camp. Finding no sign of the stolen bag of valuables that he had been sent to retrieve, he went into the cave and found a small, old, wooden chest sitting against the cave wall.

Inside the chest, Baric found what he had been searching for, the stolen items in a small bag. As he returned outside, he gave a sharp whistle, and Ramura came from behind a group of trees and padded up to him. The great lion nudged him sympathetically, as he placed the bag in the pack on the lion’s side. Picking up the broken sword, he began digging a grave for the four men in the loose soil.

Once they were buried, he mounted Ramura and began the journey back to Daggerfall, where he would return the valuables to their rightful owner. This was the last mission he’d been assigned by the Fighter’s Guild, and he was looking forward to some free time, and the drinking contest he had promised Helja.

  4. I logged on a few times, and did some quests, but was alone. lol
I would love to see a weekly event, and I think rotating it does help everyone have a chance to participate. That's how I voted. However, there are only a few of us, so setting a single day might be better for some. Either way, I will do all I can to participate as often as possible. :)

  5. This is OOC: For those who don't know, Baric is a character I created a long time ago, back in the late 1980s. He was originally one of three characters that starred in a comic book I was writing back then, called Dark Regions. Only three issues were printed, and it never really took off. But it was fun. Since that time, in every MMORPG I've played, which is nearly all of them, I've always created a character named Baric.

A few years ago, I decided to write a series of fantasy novels based around a world that I created called Hir. In this world is a forest and a city with the same name, Laerean. I wrote this series initially with Baric in mind, and Ranger Baric is the star in the first three novels of the series. Here is a character card I made for him for his role in the novels. Also, below that, is a snippet from the first book, A Whisper in the Shadows, that was the inspiration for this back story for Baric in ESO, in a way.

    75691703_BaricCharacterCard.thumb.jpg.27388dcf3f983302d010f6196193e1b8.jpg

    Snippet:

Whisper remembered the looks her people had given Baric as they had traversed through the city. “I apologize for my people,” she said. “I had never realized how prejudiced we were towards humans until now.”

Baric looked at her with a perplexed expression. “What do you mean?”

“You did not see how they looked at you?”

Baric just smiled. “Yes, but it doesn't bother me. Why should it matter?”

Whisper was now perplexed. “Why should it matter? How could you not feel anger towards such prejudice?” She could not understand why he wouldn't be angry. She had most certainly been enraged by such looks from humans. She remembered the marketplace in Chartol. She had been furious, but had kept her feelings hidden.

Baric just kept smiling. “They’re just people. Some people are good, some people are bad and some people just don't care. Some feel superior, some feel inferior, but we’re all the same when you get right down to it. People are people, whether they have fur and sharp teeth, dark skin and pointed ears, short bodies and long beards, it’s all the same. There’s no one better than me, there’s no one lesser than me. We’re all equal. We’re all just … people.”

  6. Baric knocked, only entering the office when he heard Captain Josen's voice sound, "Come!"

After a smart salute, Baric took the offered seat. "You wanted to see me, Captain?"

Josen looked up from the sheafs of papers he was reading and nodded. "I have your resignation here. You've served with the Daggerfall army for seven years, and with great distinction, I might add. I would like to understand why you are leaving, with a great career ahead of you."

Baric sighed. As much as he honored the service, he had learned much during his stint with them, and he felt another call upon his life. One he could not ignore.

"You know my history," Baric said. "I'm an Imperial, though I've been declared a citizen of Stormhaven, where my parents settled shortly after I was born."

Josen nodded. "Yes, I've read your file. You were orphaned as a babe when Midnight Union bandits attacked and destroyed your home. You were miraculously overlooked and found in the ruins later, then adopted by your uncle, the blacksmith."

Baric didn't remember any of that, though his uncle Niel had told the story to him often enough that it was very much like a memory.

"What does this have to do with your decision to leave your service to the Daggerfall Covenant?" Josen asked.

"I've traveled many places, met many different kinds of people, some good, some bad, but most just trying to make their way in this world. This war has displaced so many, people who are not warriors or many that don't even care about the politics. I feel it is my duty to help them find a place that is safe for them, a place where they can live each day without worrying about raiders or bandits, or enemy soldiers who display prejudices against them, simply because they are not one of their own."

Josen shook his head. "This war is necessary. We cannot allow Clivia Tharn and the Daedra to rule the Cyrodil."

Baric nodded. "I agree, Captain, but we aren't just fighting against the Deadra. We are fighting among ourselves."

"You can't honestly tell me you have sympathy for the elves, or the lizards and cats," Josen said with disdain. "The Daggerfall Covenant is in the right. Tamriel belongs to men."

Baric frowned. "With all due respect Captain, that is the very prejudice of which I have grown tired of. People are people. Whether they have fur or skin, or even scales, they are all people, and many suffer because of such narrow views. Are not the Bretons, your own allies, yet half elf? You welcome them into the Covenant. I am through with war among ourselves. I intend to help those who have been affected by this unnecessary hatred. It is the Daedra we should be focusing on, not because they are unlike us, but because they are pure evil! I appreciate what the Covenant has done for me, and my family, but I can no longer turn away from the suffering of those in need. I will go my own path from here on out. I have joined the Fighters Guild, but I intend to be more than just a mercenary for hire. I intend to make a difference and hopefully see an end to this conflict between the people of Tamriel."

Josen flinched at Baric's heated diatribe, but kept his face stern. "Then, your resignation is approved. Despite your years of exemplary service, the Daggergall Covenant has no need of such views within its ranks. Ranger Baric Ironfist, you are hereby dismissed from the army of the Covenant."

Baric stood, and for a second, he thought to simply walk away, angered by the prejudice he perceived in his Captain. But instead, he performed one more quick salute, waiting for the Captain's half-hearted return, before turning and leaving the office. No longer a member of the military forces for the Daggerfall Covenant, he set out to seek his own adventures. Adventures that would assist those in need, regardless of their race and origins. He would stand against evil, no matter who it sided with. He was now a lone Ranger, owing allegiance to no one but his own conscious.

Well, I did get some kills, but got killed more than I'd have liked. Still, as frustrating as a couple of runs were, we did finally win one, and that made it all better. lol
Had a lot of fun. Thanks for putting up with me. :)

That sounds super exciting! I hope your beta read and co-authoring goes well. Looking forward to when you can divulge the titles of these books ;)

Well, the Title of the book I'm beta reading is Wielders of Arantha: Endgame. It is book #3 in a series written by Patrick Hodges, my editor. It is a science-fiction story with fantasy elements. I loved the first two books. I'm looking forward to this final installment, and he tells me it has plenty of action, which I really love. lol :)

The book I'm writing is called Tamesa. It is one I am co-authoring with fantasy author Aaron-Michael Hall. She is an awesome writer. Tamesa is a fantasy novel, and information about it is available on my website for any who are interested.

  9. I won't be voting, since I won't be able to be reading. I'm currently swamped with a beta read for an author friend of the last book in his scifan trilogy, and wrapping up work on another book I'm co-authoring. Afraid I won't have much reading time in August. Hopefully, I will be able to start participating by this Fall. But enjoying reading everyone's comments. :)
