I agree, I did not like Ged's cocky attitude at first too. I was very surprised when he was so harshly scarred, but was glad he remained a hero character by being humbled, instead of becoming a villain and seeking revenge or blaming Jasper for his own arrogance.

Agreed 100% on that. He took the humility and used it to be better than before, but with some self doubt.

The archipelago setting I feel was very unique of this author. Each island got it's own climate and culture. The map included in my book also made it easy to follow Ged's quest, which was great because I'm more of a visual person.

I loved the map as well! :) I should have referred to it more as I was reading though.

One thing that really stood out to me was that this book was originally published in 1968, but it featured main characters who were colored. Even though I'm Latina, it was so difficult for me to picture Ged as having dark hair and dark skin because most main characters are not people of color. Before I got to the description of him I just imagined him as being blonde haired and blue eyed because so often heroes are. It was really difficult to remind myself that nope, he was tan. Even today, having a main character that's a person of color is rare, so I can't even imagine how revolutionary that was in the 60s to read a book like that.

Lol I am glad I wasn't the only one! At the first mention of Ged's color I had to read it twice and I was like "this is awesome!".

I'm slightly confused about the Stone of Terrenon. It was something evil and of darkness, but other than "temptation" I'm not sure what it was supposed to represent or it's significance to Earthsea. Where did it come from? Exactly what powers does it hold? How long has it been in Osskil? I'm hoping we get to learn more about it in the other books of the series because I've been left wondering.

I think it was meant more as a symbol of evil old magic more than anything. That is what I gathered from it at least? I believe it harbored one of the "Old Powers". Not to spoil... but if you continue to the next book, there is more on Old Powers ;)

As for the ending, I'm also slightly confused. So, I get that the shadow was part of Ged. But does that mean there's a parallel universe of shadows for everything that has a name in Earthsea? Did the shadow build the shadow island Ged confronted him on, so that's why it disappeared when Ged said the shadow's name? This is also something I hope we learn in the other books of this series. It just seemed so bizarre to me that they were on the this shadow island, then fell into the water. Also, where did the shadow go? Did it get absorbed by Ged or go back to it's shadow realm? Lol, so many questions! Perhaps I missed something in the writing/context clues. I'm hoping someone can answer some of them.

Again I took this as a symbol more than anything. Ged overcame his self doubt, becoming a great wizard and man in the end. Was able to overcome his mistakes and doubts in himself and reach his full potential by becoming one with his shadow? That is my thought process at least haha.

If you ever feel like playing a casual game over Skype let me know! I don't mind super casual play at all. I used to teach at weekly new player events in my old city.

Oh wow, I never even considered that an option! I'd love to do that sometime!

  3. I love MTG. I've played very casually for a few years now. Most of the time I'm just reading the background of the card and admiring the artwork. I don't have a very good grasp on the advanced mechanics of the game though. I primarily play the challenge decks (such as The Horde, Hydra) or on the PC/on my phone.

  4. I thought this book was short but amazing!

Guin did a wonderful coming of age story for Ged. I didn't like him at first because he was cocky and wasting his potential on jealousy with this rival Jasper. He really just wanted to be the best and prove himself at no cost. Did that ever change in a drastic measures though! Though it may have seemed harsh, Ged being scarred for life and having to live in fear of his shadow was a surprising twist. I feel like it was the humility he needed to be a great wizard though.

Magic based on the names of things has always been fascinating to me. The idea of knowing the true name behind someone or some object means you'd have control is spot on for me. Guin did a great job building this archipelago, the magic system, meaningful characters and a great story! At the time of this books release there was really nothing comparible for young adults, even after all these years this is a great book!

  5. Hello everyone!!

The time has come to start planning for the September Book of the Month.

As always with a new BotM discussion opening, I like to throw in a suggested theme or idea. For this one we'll be going a little more personal than usual. Within the great community of RoH, in the ESO division, we have our own author! As such, it would be amazing to read one of his novels.

You may be wondering who this person is?

Without further ado I'd like to nominate our very own @RhemaTom's novel A Whisper in the Shadows. The book is available in eBook, paperback and audio format. Also available at online retail outlets such as Amazon, Barnes  & Noble, iTunes, etc. Tom will be offering a 30% off coupon for any books purchased from his official site and will gladly autograph the copy as well.

Maybe timing right now for me is best for July and August because I don't know when I'll be leaving for the military.

Maybe we could launch new RP every month? That would mean the next one would be a fresh RP?

We should make a new session for a RP game. I'd be game to make a new session. I want to try out a empire for Rp

I'm thinking we can get this going in September when things slow down for people and maybe we'll have a few more interested. What do you think? 😊

More empire management. They say robots will have an easy time with this. But I'm looking forward to trying this out

I won't be voting, since I won't be able to be reading. I'm currently swamped with a beta read for an author friend of the last book in his scifan trilogy, and wrapping up work on another book I'm co-authoring. Afraid I won't have much reading time in August. Hopefully, I will be able to start participating by this Fall. But enjoying reading everyone's comments. :)

That sounds super exciting! I hope your beta read and co-authoring goes well. Looking forward to when you can divulge the titles of these books ;)
