I am curious though as to teaching someone new a difficult fight in 2 hours.

I think we'll be in one of two situations. Either the new recruit will have already done the fight on VM before (after all, they gotta walk before they run), or if for some reason they haven't then they probably have other equivalent experience in VM or MM. and catch on quickly.

So we won't ever really need to teach all the mechanics, just the differences from VM to MM.

We'll train people who have done VM and are looking for the next level, not somebody who is completely new to raiding or has only done SM. We can direct people without that experience to gain it first in SMOPS, The Last Line, Slayers, and Ascension's Fury first before joining this group.

I don't really like the 9 o'clock start time as I'm never really gonna be able to go past 11

What do other people think about starting at 9pm vs 8:30pm ET?

For me I have appointments on Tuesday that run until 7:30pm ET, but sometimes they go late until 8:00pm ET. It's always a bit of a rush for me to get back home and online. It's the reason why I've been late a couple times.

I really want to hear from people that struggle to make it on time these past few weeks. Is that due to the time, or is it more of a lazy/forgetfulness problem? If it's the latter, maybe we can still start a bit earlier but work on our punctuality ;)

Awesome set of expectations!  Appreciate the thought you put into these.  Since I only have the one raiding character who is a melee DPS (he has 248 tank gear too, I just haven't made time to learn how to tank yet and MM isn't a place to learn, lol),  probably best to put me as an alternate.

That's the purpose of the practice week. Bring your MM-ready melee DPS to the raid nights, then on the practice week you can bring something else to work on! Could be that gunslinger we were talking about, or you could try our your tank spec. We are devoting time to practice and learn in order to make the team more knowledgeable and flexible. Practice week is not MM.

The point of us doing different roles and classes is not to be able to do MM in each of them. For example, I don't expect @Sayuri to roll a MM DPS. It's not her forte and she would not enjoy it. However, I do expect her to know what it's like to be a DPS. She does already know that by the way, and it gives her a huge advantage when she tanks or heals.

So no, you probably won't tank Master Mode anytime soon unless you really want to. For you specifically, I would encourage you to work on a ranged DPS for practice week. You'll learn another dimension of the DPS role and you'll start to work up a secondary DPS character if one week we have too many melee.

I'd love the opportunity to heal if there's a slot open. My Commando and Sage are both well geared and ready to go (I've played my Operative a fair amount so I have a Scoundrel set I can use, but his left side gear is still 224 Ultimate Exarch stuff lol), so I can play whatever class the other healer isn't. I have tanked and dpsed in the past (mostly in SM and some VM), but I usually try to focus on being the best healer that I can be for Master Mode content.

Glad to hear you're interested! :)

In fact, I think we should set up a Discord server for PROPS. It'd be great for easily talking to people, especially if someone might be struggling with a fight. or something like that, they can talk to people on Discord and get much faster responses than on the forums.

This is actually the exact thing I don't want to do. There are a couple reasons why:

    1. This team is open and inclusive. If we had a private chat or server, people couldn't drop in and listen. That's how we get new members interested in MM raiding, by leaving the doors open.

    2. Discord is a social media platform. I won't force someone to join it in order to participate on the team, nor will I force them to divulge their handle to the whole group if they don't want to.

We don't need Discord for anything. The only thing we need is a way for me to quickly get in contact with raiders individually, and there are many ways outside of Discord to achieve that goal. That's why I want to let members decide where and how I'm allowed to contact them.

  4. Hey everyone! As @Owyn mentioned, I'll be taking over organizing and leading the Tuesday night PROPS team. I've got a few ideas on how to organize the group, and I'd like to get your feedback on them.

So without further ado, here are the main facets I'm adding. Take a moment to read through each of them. These will become the rules and law of the group, so this is the time to add your voice and influence the team's direction! I've added spoilers with my comments and reasoning behind some of them if you're curious on why I'm pushing us a certain way.

    Objective

Strike Team Alpha is a Master Mode progression group.

MM operations require dedication and skill from every team member. There are no backpacks in these fights! While the team will push for the hardest operation content in the game, there will be plenty of opportunities to train and prepare both current and new members for the challenge. If you want to get into MM operations but don't think you're good enough, this is the group for you. Anyone who has the commitment to learn and improve is welcome!

    Schedule

The group will raid on Tuesday night from 9:00pm ET to 11:00pm ET, or 11:30pm ET. The raid will extend an extra 30 minutes only if we are close to pushing a boss and all team members can stay later.

    Spoiler

The previous time slot was 8:30pm ET to 10:30pm ET. I've noticed that several of us (myself included) are struggling to get to raid on time. Pushing it back 30 minutes should give us more breathing room to get together before starting.

2 hours is not a lot for some harder content. If we're making good progress on a boss, we'll push for another 30 minutes. However, if we've been beating our heads against a boss for a long time, we'll call it early. If you can't stay an extra 30 minutes, that's fine! Each night we'll play it by ear.

    Team Members

The team will consist of 8 primaries and additional alternates. The primary raiders are expected to be available 3 out of 4 raids per month. If they cannot consistently be available, they will step into an alternate position and allow an alternate to become a primary.

    Spoiler

Raid teams work the best when the raiders have good cohesion between each other. That's why we'll try to keep the same core group of people for each raid.

If you enjoy raiding with everyone but want to cut back some, you can step down to an alternate and not have to commit to every week while still being able to raid with the group once or twice a month.

If you're new and want to join the group, you can be an alternate and raid occasionally and prepare to become a primary raider when an opening is available.

    Roles

Raid roles (Tank, DPS, Heal) are not fixed per member. In fact, this team will actively encourage role swapping. Members are expected to learn different classes, specs, and roles.

    Spoiler

I firmly believe that the best parsing DPS raider who doesn't understand tanking or healing is infinitely inferior to a moderate DPS raider who is intimately familiar with all roles.

Once you understand the mechanics of the different roles and how they play out during operation fights, you gain a new sixth sense in combat. Healers know when to burn heals on tanks if they've been the tank and know what boss abilities hit hard. DPS know when to rotate defenses if they've been the healer during a low health period.

That philosophy of understanding each of your teammates and what they're doing during a fight will make the best raid team, and it's needed for the challenges ahead. We're going to push some of you outside your comfort zone, but you'll come out a better raider in your primary role and class for it!

    Practice Week

One week during each month, the group will stop its current progression in Master Mode and go into a Veteran Mode operation. During this week, alternates who have not raided in a while will be given priority over primaries.

Additionally, every member is expected to change one facet of their raider. They may choose a different spec for their class, switch to another class entirely, or switch to a different role.

The purpose of practice week is to:

    1. Provide opportunities to train new alternates who want to become primaries

    2. Encourage primaries to learn new specs, classes, and roles and grow their skill as a raider

    Spoiler

This is the big idea I have. As we raid each week, we struggle with finding opportunities to change and improve. Whether that's learning a new spec or gearing up, it's hard to do that during Master Mode progression since the fights are so demanding.

By devoting one week of the month to experimentation, we can take a breather and do something new. If you're a primary raider and need a break, you can step down that week and let an alternate join without consequence. If you've got another character you want to gear up, you can bring them. Or maybe you want to practice another spec's rotation, but can't do that during Master Mode because it lowers your DPS.

Master Mode is rough. Practice week will be the time for us to blow off steam and let our hair down so that we can focus up when it comes to the real fights!

    Communication

The team will use the current primary VOIP tool for Remnants of Hope. (At the time of writing that is TeamSpeak). This will be used for raid nights, and other ROH members may join and listen in. Keep in mind that if you join and are not part of the raid team, you will need to remain quiet during boss fights.

In addition to the VOIP tool for raid nights, every member (primaries and alternates) must supply one method of instant communication to the leader of the team. Instant means that you will receive a notification immediately and be able to respond within 5 minutes. Some example methods could be:

    • Discord handle (with mobile app notifications)
    • Phone number for texting
    • Skype or any other instant message app
    • Another member who has your contact information

Last minute changes happen all the time. Someone may get caught at work or have a family emergency come up. At that time, it is the member's responsibility to tell the leader and the leader's responsibility to find a replacement ASAP. If the leader has a way to instantly reach all primaries and alternates, they'll be able to find a replacement faster than through the forums. This will mean more opportunities for alternates, fewer canceled raid nights, and fewer late starts.

    Spoiler

This one might be controversial, but if you think about it we kind of already do this. For example, I have Sayuri's number and we can text each other instant updates. Sayuri has Aravail's number. If Aravail doesn't want me to have his number, he already has a way for me to instantly reach him since I can text Sayuri and she can text him.

We do this all the time. I'll ask someone to ping another person on Discord, text them, shoot them something on Skype, etc. I firmly believe in privacy, and I don't want anyone to compromise their privacy for a game. There are a lot of possibilities to safely achieve that instant communication between us.

Everyone can have their own method for me to check in and send out updates. So if you don't want to join a group Discord chat, you don't have to.

Be sure to read through everything! Now is the time to add your voice to the discussion and influence how the team is led and where it should be going.

  5. Hey guys, right now the team seems to be suffering from a lack of leadership. Someone to organize events, recruit and train new people, and get things going with a vision and goal for the group. Each week we wait until the last minute to decide both if we're raiding and what we're doing. Naturally people keep dropping out because of that.

Out of the current group of people who are interested in the team, are there any other volunteers who'd be willing to take on this responsibility?

    @Tyrlo @Aravail @Sayuri @Orig Wrangler @Vorn @Passiflora @BattingChart @Hippy @RaVem

I'm sure a couple people other than myself are frustrated. We should figure this out asap in the next day or two so we can set a game plan for the team before it falls apart.

I've talked with Hippy and @Owyn about volunteering myself, but I'm not sure it's the opportune moment for me to take that on with the current state of things. However, if nobody wants to do it someone has to if we want to go into Master Mode.

@Hippy No way I can do 10K dps which is why I said I'm happy to back up for when you need another DPS for whenever you do veteran mode and need a fill-in.

Just FYI you don't need 10k dps for MM! Consistent 8-9k and good mechanic awareness will take you through most all of the fights.

  7. The goal of this group is still Master Mode. I want to re-iterate that so that people know what the expectations are. We'll only be on Veteran Mode ops for as long as it takes us to get any remaining gear or practice we need.

They're tough fights and you'll need to learn top-tier mechanics and practice your rotation. We'll help you get there, gear each other up, and help with tips and tricks that we use to get the most out of our specs; we're going to push you to become better. While we're going to have a hell of a fun time doing it, we will need to focus up and know when it's time to goof off and time to push.

So before you commit, make sure that Master Mode is still something you're wanting to do. It's more important for us to build that team cohesion early on and not have someone drop out when we hit the harder stuff and throw off the group dynamic.
